Generate a random number

Set a range between two numbers (e.g. 1 to 100) and click the button to generate a random number. The range can be as small as 1 or 2, or much larger to suit your needs, such as creating a number series for a game.

How the random number generator works

This random number generator uses two specified values to generate your random number. Both negative and positive values are supported.

The page uses Math.random()—a built-in JavaScript function in your browser—to generate numbers between 0 and 1, which are then used to select a random number within your chosen range.

This method is sufficiently random for most purposes, but not suitable for security-critical applications like cryptography.

What is a random number?

A random number or value is one that is not predetermined or deterministic. Random numbers may follow certain patterns depending on the algorithm used. Truly random numbers are generated using physical phenomena such as thermal noise or radioactive decay.
