Generation I: The original journey (1996-1999)
The first generation of Pokémon™ laid the foundation for the entire series. With the games Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow on Game Boy, players were introduced to the Kanto region and the first 151 Pokémon™. This generation established the core concepts of the Pokémon™ world, such as catching and training Pokémon™, challenging gym leaders, and striving to become a Pokémon™ master. Some popular Pokémon™ from this generation are Pikachu, Charizard, Blastoise, and Mewtwo.
Generation II: Expanding the world (1999-2002)
Generation II continued to build on the success of the first generation with the games Gold, Silver, and Crystal on Game Boy Color. This generation introduced the Johto region, 100 new Pokémon™, and new game mechanics like time of day and breeding. Players could also revisit the Kanto region, providing a larger and more cohesive game world. Some popular Pokémon™ from this generation are Lugia, Ho-Oh, Tyranitar, and Umbreon.
Generation III: Adventures in Hoenn (2002-2006)
With the games Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald on Game Boy Advance, Generation III took players to the Hoenn region. This generation introduced 135 new Pokémon™ and advanced graphics, providing a more immersive gaming experience. Additionally, the remakes FireRed and LeafGreen revisited the Kanto region with improved graphics and gameplay. Some popular Pokémon™ from this generation are Rayquaza, Gardevoir, Blaziken, and Metagross.
Generation IV: Legends from Sinnoh (2006-2010)
Generation IV continued to develop the Pokémon™ world with the games Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum on Nintendo DS. The Sinnoh region introduced 107 new Pokémon™ and utilized the DS console's features, such as the touchscreen and wireless connectivity. HeartGold and SoulSilver were remakes of the Johto games and provided a modernized experience of that region. Some popular Pokémon™ from this generation are Lucario, Garchomp, Dialga, and Palkia.
Generation V: Exploring Unova (2010-2013)
With the games Black and White as well as Black 2 and White 2 on Nintendo DS, Generation V took players to the Unova region. This generation introduced 156 brand new Pokémon™ and a deeper story, providing a more engaging gaming experience. The Unova region was also unique because it did not include any Pokémon™ from previous generations at the beginning of the game. Some popular Pokémon™ from this generation are Zoroark, Hydreigon, Reshiram, and Zekrom.
Generation VI: Kalos and Mega Evolution (2013-2016)
Generation VI marked the transition to Nintendo 3DS with the games X and Y. The Kalos region introduced 72 new Pokémon™ and the exciting Mega Evolution, which gave certain Pokémon™ temporary power boosts during battles. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were remakes of the Hoenn games and provided a visual update to that region. Some popular Pokémon™ from this generation are Greninja, Sylveon, Aegislash, and Xerneas.
Generation VII: Alola and Z-Moves (2016-2019)
With the games Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon on Nintendo 3DS, Generation VII took players to the Alola region. This generation introduced 88 new Pokémon™ and the powerful Z-Moves, which gave Pokémon™ temporary, powerful attacks. Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! took players back to the Kanto region on Nintendo Switch, with a new gameplay style inspired by Pokémon™ GO. Some popular Pokémon™ from this generation are Mimikyu, Lycanroc, Decidueye, and Tapu Koko.
